The 5 Inventory Types Explained
Defining the inventory categories in our system for you
We categorized different inventory types that we can help you manage to make it easier to organize inventory items. Having these categories also helps standardize your operating procedures, with clearly defined inventory management parameters for your staff. Here are the categories that are used in our software:
Standard Inventory
This type of inventory item does not need to be tracked by lot, batch, or serial number. A few examples of Standard Inventory that our inventory system manages include Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like masks, surgical gowns, gloves, and more, as well as medical supplies like Band-Aids, cotton, bandages, syringes and other items like these.
Serialized Inventory
Serialized Inventory refers to items that have a unique identifier or serial number attached to it. Some examples of serialized inventory that our system helps manage include appliances or electronics like EKG machines and other medical devices used in patient treatments. For lab settings, this could apply to items like microscopes and other laboratory equipment.
Serialized Inventory with Quantity
This category includes Inventory items that are released in varying quantities and have a serial number attached. A few examples of Serialized Inventory with Quantity that our software helps manage in the healthcare industry include laboratory samples, medical implants, certain medications, or chemical drums.
Batch/Lot Inventory
These items are produced in batches and often have an expiration date that needs to be monitored. Our system makes it easy to track items like this even after it’s left your facility. This is handy in the event that recalls have to be issued. Some examples of items that would have expiration dates are food, chemicals, or medical supplies.
Non-Inventory Items
This category refers to inventory items that aren’t merchandise but are still billable. In other words, non-inventory is meant for non-physical items like service fees. If your inventory doesn’t fit into any of the other categories, they probably fit in this one.
