Global Brigades – Case Study

Improving Medical Inventory Accuracy Across Borders with Our System

About Global Brigades

Global Medical Brigades is part of an international movement of students and healthcare professionals working alongside rural communities in Honduras and Nicaragua. Their mission is to implement sustainable health systems and provide medical care where access is otherwise limited. With volunteers sorting, filling, and issuing prescriptions, accurate and reliable inventory management is crucial.

The Challenge: Managing Critical Medication Inventory

Global Brigades faced major Inventory System issues:
  • High Volume of Expired Medications: Without a tracking system, valuable donated medications were going unused and expiring.
  • Limited Visibility: There was no real-time insight into purchased vs. donated items or inventory levels by location.
  • Multiple Countries, No Unified System: Managing inventory in both Honduras and Nicaragua required a flexible, cloud-based solution.

"These challenges made it necessary to find a configurable and scalable inventory system."

Why Global Brigades Chose Our System

Our Barcode Inventory System platform was chosen for its:

  • Expiration Date Tracking: Allowed the team to use medications in the correct order and reduce waste.
  • Multi-Site Functionality: Supported access across different countries while maintaining independent site control.
  • Configurable Data Fields: Tailored inventory fields to meet the unique needs of medical mission logistics.
  • Barcode Scanning Integration: Enabled faster data entry and minimized human error during high-demand seasons.

Implementation and Results: Global Visibility and Local Efficiency

“In Honduras, we had all the inventory ready in an Excel sheet to transfer. Once items were in, training was not too difficult.”

– Maura Riordon, Medications Coordinator, Global Brigades

The system was implemented across Honduras and Nicaragua. In Honduras, inventory data was prepped in Excel for quick upload. Nicaragua faced more challenges due to limited prep time, but with our Systems’ support team, both implementations were successful.

Key improvements:

  • Track by Expiry Date: Ensured timely usage of medications.
  • Efficient Batch Tracking: Monitored lots across locations.
  • Reduced Expired Waste: Prioritized soon-to-expire inventory.
  • Enhanced Reporting: Custom reports supported internal audits and donor accountability.
